Catawba Heights Elementary School

The Composters!

groupforpage

Our Eco-Footprint Challenge team

Our Second Graders at Catawba Heights.

Our goal

Reduce lunchroom food waste that goes to the landfill.

Our idea

We will compost our vegetable and fruit lunch waste and use it in our school gardens to grow food. We will also share what we learn about composting and other kinds of conservation with other students.

Our plan

First we will establish a baseline of how much food we throw away each day. We will do this by weighing how much waste the second-grade class generates each week.

Then we will measure how much fruit and vegetable waste we throw away. This will give us an estimate of how much we can reduce waste through composting.

With help from volunteers we will build a composting area next to our gardens where we will turn waste into food for our gardens.

We will study composting and other kinds of conservation. We will share this knowledge with others through morning announcements, essays and posters.

Through this work we plan to save the world one student, one worm, one apple core at a time!
